A Brazilian composer, guitarist and performer of electronic music.
A guitarist by training, with a diploma from the Federal University of the Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Aurélio Edler-Copes studied composition at the Basque Country Advanced Centre for Music (Spain), before obtaining a master’s degree in composition and music theatre with Georges Aperghis at the Haute École de Musique in Bern (Switzerland). He completed his training with the composition and computer music course of Ircam, with Yann Maresz.
A composer in residence at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, the KulturKontakt in Vienna, he also worked in the studios of the GRAME in Lyons, of the Gmem in Marseilles and the Scrime in Bordeaux. He took part in many collaborations, notably with the company Éclats of Bordeaux (2013) and the ensemble Taller Sonoro in Seville (2017-2018).
Edler-Copes’ artistic investigations relate to the fusion of acoustic and electronic instruments, the creation of new electronic layouts in real time, and the integration of electronics, video and light within his own music. He composes for all three categories: Como el aire for seven musicians, first performed by the ensemble Musikfabrik (2007); Does the sea remember the walker upon it for orchestra, first performed by the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra (2010); Encore seule for voice and instrumental ensemble, first performed by Eloïse Labaume and L’Itinéraire (2012); Sull’oceano for saxophone, piano, percussion and live electronics, first performed by the ensemble Proxima Centauri (2015); Hörspiel #1 for female voice, electric guitar and radio, first performed by the duet Bazar électrique (2017); Contra los muros for 10 musicians, sampler and live electronics (2018).
Co-founder and artistic director of the ensemble Krater in the Spanish Basque country, Aurélio Edler-Copes is also a guitarist and performer of electronic music. Together with the harpist-singer Eloïse Labaume, he forms the duet Bazar électrique.
