Sound always occurs in a venue, a concert hall, though also, more exceptionally, in situ and in places, open or closed, that are not a priori intended for music, that readily partake of natural models: there has been a long history of music in the open air, in gardens or within a landscape, by a lake, on a hill, even in an urban environment…
Now let us reverse the proposition: how would it be if the sound produced a place, revealed and configured a space?
This seminar intends, by focussing on the work of Salvatore Sciarrino and other composers, to explore these places, be they unassuming or permeated by a multiplicity of perspectives; these places, these venues as moments in the cycle of life, of the seasons and of the day, even of some cosmogony or mythology; these places as journeys, of the imagination, of the mind or of some private dramaturgy…
And these sounds that mark out a horizon are evidence of a distancing, a lontananza, as is so wonderfully put in Italian, of a suspended tension towards an elsewhere, another nucleus.
