Giacinto Scelsi aujourd'hui [Giacinto Scelsi Today]

Enhanced with two original poems by respectively Joëlle Léandre and André Pieyre de Mandiargues, these acts of the European Music Study Days devoted to Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988) consist of three parts. The first two deal with the æsthetics and the analysis of the Giacinto Scelsi’s opus (both poetic and musical), while the third is devoted to the impact and influence of the composer on contemporary art. More or less probable comparisons are made with Walther Klein, Constantin Brancusi, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, György Kurtág, Tristan Murail, Dominique Lemaître and Thierry Alla. The first chapter focusses on the brilliance of his poetic muse, the relationship with dance, the aural specificity and the cultural and ritualistic involvement of Scelsi’s music, while the large second chapter concentrates on composition techniques, on modes of play and on some major scores (Ko-Tha, Les Chants du Capricorne, Konx-Om-Pax, Four Pieces on one note, Pranam II, Second String Quartet, etc.).
From alpha to omega, a quick glance at the contents page reveals kaleidoscopic purpose regarding the philosophy behind the work’s scholarly approach. We have called on several generations of musicologists, deliberately multiplying the points of view, bringing together a dancer, composers, conductors, poets, visual artistes and publishers… people close to Scelsi, who knew his habits and the demands of the composer pianist… but also young researchers who for the most part have successively presented their theses.

And so, at the heart of this completely new summa, with its deliberately multifarious origins, friendly discourse can rub shoulders with more arid analysis, just as a dissertation on æsthetics can make way for an essentially poetic homage…
