After instrumental training (piano, violin, percussion), Matthias Pintscher studied conducting with Peter Eötvös as well as composition with Giselher Klebe in Detmold and Manfred Trojahn in Düsseldorf. He also met Hans Werner Henze during the summer classes at Montepulciano. With his first opera, Thomas Chatterton (1998) he achieved international recognition. He was invited all over the world and in 2008 Pierre Boulez conducted the premiere of his Osiris with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Il obtained a Master of Arts degree in music at Mills College after following the classes of Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud while steeping himself in jazz. In 1966 he founded his own ensemble, Steve Reich and Musicians, and this gave him a suitable framework for his experimental form of composition.

In the course of her apprenticeship she met Sylvano Bussotti, Salvatore Sciarrino, Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail and benefitted from their advice.

She explores tone-colours, breath sounds, breathing, and studies the relationship of instrumentalists with sounds in space. She frequently makes use of spatialisation processes (Chroma for ensemble and sound objets, 2003; Stirrings Still I for five players, 2006; Stasis for 16 soloists, first performed by the ensemble MusikFabrik, 2011). Silence is another fundamental element in her concept of music: she makes it audible, composes with and around it.

Born into a highly musical family, Tona Scherchen, known as Ti-tigre, started her musical apprenticeship at a very early age. She pursued it for ten years in China, at the Peking and Shanghai conservatories, before becoming a pupil of Hans Werner Henze in Salzburg, of Olivier Messiaen in Paris and of György Ligeti in Vienna. Gaining, notably, a First Prize from the Paris Conservatory (1964) as well as a First Prize in the Composition Competition of the Gaudeamus Foundation (1967), she brings together the European avant-garde idioms of the 1960s and 1970s in a personal language.
