A French composer born December 12, 1924 in Marseilles, who died July 29, 2005.

Francis Miroglio studied at the Marseilles Conservatory and then the Paris Conservatory. A pupil of Darius Milhaud, Bruno Maderna, Eugène Bigot and Paul Van Kempen, he completed his musical training at the Darmstadt summer courses, won the Gaudeamus Prize in 1960 and that of the Biennale de Paris in 1961. The founder and director of the Nuits de la fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (1965-1971), he was subsequently artistic director of the Semaines Musicales Internationales d'Orléans (1976). Composing in a post-serial style, he uses the concept of mobility, of controlled chance and opened the path, in his scores, to superimposable instrumentation (Réseaux, 1964; Phases, 1965). He also has a diploma in the visual arts, and combines the pictorial and musical arts, basing himself notably of the works of visual artists such as Calder and Miro (Projections for string quartet with slides of paintings of Joan Miro ad lib., 1967). His output as a whole appears as a reflection on tone-colour (Magies, 1960; Ping Squash, 1980; Habeas corpus, 1984) and on musical style, through the invention of intuitive musical notation for the instrumentalist.

Biography

Francis Miroglio was born in Marseilles in 1924. After a baccalaureate with philosophy option, he undertook university studies in this same discipline. His musical training began at the Marseilles Conservatory and continued at the Paris Conservatory. He studied composition with Darius Milhaud and conducting with Bruno Maderna, Eugène Bigot and Paul Van Kempen. He was notably to conduct the orchestra and chorus of the ORTF as well as of Marseilles Opera. His apprenticeship continued at the summer courses in Darmstadt, where his compositions were performed on several occasions between 1959 and 1965.

Acknowledged by his peers, he won the international composition prize of the Gaudeamus Foundation in 1960, the composition prize of the Biennale de Paris in 1961, and then spent a year in Berlin, in 1967, with a bursary from the Ford Foundation. In 1965 he founded and became director until 1971 of the Nuits de la fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, subsequently becoming director of the Semaines Musicales Internationales d’Orléans in 1976.

A research assistant at the GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) in 1959-1960, Miroglio also gained a diploma in applied acoustics and sound production. He worked at the electronic music studio of the Freie Universität in Berlin and composed, in the early 1960s, electro-acoustic music (Chitarrisca, 1961) before abandoning this approach to composition in 1973.

Francis Miroglio was the first to make complete use of serial technique for the ondes Martenot (Pierres noires, 1958) and to apply serial principles to the guitar (Choréïques, 1958). His style is post-serial in orientation and turns towards open forms and controlled chance, the aleatory approach being for him an enrichment solely if it is kept under control. This mobility contains within itself networks of possibilities that enable a score to be performed in superimposable, complementary versions or in formal variants. For example, the score of Réseaux (1964) is presented s a mobile form with the harp as the main instrument and with complementary instrumentations. Multiple versions unfold like a ribbon of musical pages that can be folded to form the desired version. In the case of Extensions (1971), the performers have to react to visual stimuli originating in their own feelings, always, however, with the necessity of controlling the aleatory. Francis Miroglio indicates all the musical parameters in the score and the performer can choose possible modes of play in precisely given registers. He also concerns himself with the movements of performers on stage, as in Projections, where the noises of the footsteps are integrated into the score as modes of play: sliding, slapping, fast, slow steps.

The composer has undertaken research into mobility, has concerned himself with the movement of sound matter, with the mobile spatialisation of musical writing. His titles often imply movement, action, the acquisition of space (Espaces, Extensions, Strates éclatées, Deltas, Horizons courbes, etc.) and they are always in the plural: in this way he compares the different meanings of one and the same word to so many rays of a single sun that radiate out, each in its own way, to the contours of a world of dreams. The import of every compositional gesture, every artistic intention is plural, polysemous, multi-directional.

Passionately fond of the pictorial arts, and the possessor of a DEA degree in the visual arts, Francis Miroglio became lecturer at the Sorbonne University in Paris. He organised seminars on ‘The Visual arts and music’ and ‘Scenographies and styles’. A keen collaborator with visual artistes such as Calder, he integrated visual elements into his own works.

In Projections, the members of the string quartet play in front of a blank screen onto which their performing and displacements are projected, together with some pages of the score and 58 slides of paintings by Joan Miro.

Francis Miroglio also invented new forms of musical notation and perfected a system of symbolic graphism. He is the composer of graphic music for sextet that can only be consulted on the Minitel (Mosaïques, 1985).

Several of his titles refer to the visual arts: Brisures, Réfractions, etc. He has worked on the plasticity of sound, on the sculpting of tone-colour, and in pieces for solo instrument he has applied himself to setting and resolving one of more problems that are specifically aural.

His work on tone-colour is particularly evident in his percussion works. In Extensions 2, where he uses symbolic graphism to notate a certain number of novel modes of play, of hitherto unknown sonorities, 140 players work with the phenomenon of extension with regard to intensity, pitch and reverberation. Similarly, Ping Squash (1980), a ‘match’ between two percussionists, sets out a great variety of tone-colours.

In Trip Through Trinity (1981) the musical material is organised as a progression in sound form of increasing density in which each family of tone-colours is transformed, bringing together more and more effects in a poetic aim.

Finally, Francis Miroglio pays particular attention to text. In Magies, for voice and ten instruments (1960), the textual and instrumental sonorities are in constant correspondence. The sonorities and meanings of the words, stemming from the composer’s own prose text, are organised in such a way that they create a perfect osmosis with the instrumental tone-colours. The textually coloured images act as tone-colour filters that are added to the instrumental contours and the plasticity of the voice. The work is shot through with parameters in mutation: great melodic leaps, stretched instrumental tessituras, chaotic rhythms of superimposed cells, waves of intensities, a kaleidoscope of instrumental tone-colours, a multiplicity of meanings of the poetic text.

In Habeas corpus, he chose texts in Latin for their meaning and for the musicality of the words, always with the emphasis on both meaning and tone-colour. Working on the acoustics of the vocabulary, Miroglio bases his work on an omnipresent musical figuralism with connotative messages, referential allusions and introspective images.
