Improvisation became integrated into art music styles in the course of the second half of the 20th century and its various roles had ramifications. Its fields of investigation were diverse; improvisation took part in, among other things, matters concerning composition, the shaping of educational practice, accompanying the birth of digital arts, and this in different forms ranging from the solo to pre-existent, structured ensembles such as the orchestra. It also developed in original directions, particularly with generative improvisation.
Taking account of this ontological aspect within the heterogeneous mass of manifestations is no doubt one of the most marked characteristics of improvisation today.
