"Timbres, espace, mouvement" - Sound space as scenic space

Moderator, David Jisse

With regard to musical creation, discussion often bears on the analysis of the contents, on the composer’s approach, on the way in which a relationship is established between the work and its public, yet rarely on what lies at the heart of the musical gesture, i.e. sound itself and the space within which it evolves.
The object of this encounter, organised by the Cdmc, La Muse en Circuit and the group Musicologie Informatique et Nouvelles Technologies of the Observatoire Musical Français, Sorbonne Paris-IV, is to study the different issues involved in what is called ‘sound diffusion’. We shall therefore explore all these new technologies, that now enable operations ranging from simple monophonic restitution to multichannel techniques. This will be associated with the ever greater demand of creative artistes to have at their disposition new protocols, either in concerts or in the context of an installation, such as will enable them to offer the public new ways of listening.
The relationship between the musician’s gesture and its acoustic realisation (sound quality…) will also be central to this investigation, with all the questions of realisation and of respect for the work that this involves. This new attitude towards sound space should be, for both the present and the future, a question of substance in contemporary musical creation.
