Philippe Hersant, Thierry Machuel. Writing in clairvaux

Cité de la voix - Vézelay (89)
Friday 14 February 2014 - 14:00

Moderation Philippe Lalitte

On the occasion of the simultaneous release of two CDs of music by Philippe Hersant, the Cdmc and the Mission Voix Bourgogne wanted to take stock of various aspects of the composer's choral writing by organising two successive encounters, in Paris and in Vézelay.

Philippe Hersant's catalogue includes some twenty choral works, either a cappella, or, more often, with instrumental accompaniment. Their literary sources of inspiration are highly varied: sacred texts, German, English, French and Italian poets.

No less sources of literary inspiration are these texts by prisoners, written during creative workshops in the Centrale de Clairvaux, where Philippe Hersant followed Thierry Machuel as composer in residence. How has each composer translated into his own style the influences of place, history, architecture, and of the unwilling residents? These questions lie at the heart of the exchange between the two composers.

With the participation of Jean-Marc Bardot, Gérard Condé*, Anne-Marie Salé, Philippe Hersant, Thierry Machuel, Mathieu Romano.

* 13 February only
